Handle with Care: A Guide to Packing Fragile Items

Moving to a new home is an exciting adventure, but it can also be a nerve-wracking experience, especially when it comes to packing fragile items. From delicate glassware to precious family heirlooms, ensuring that your fragile belongings arrive at your new destination intact is a top priority. To help you navigate this challenge, Athens moving experts have compiled a list of dos and don’ts for packing fragile items.

The Dos

Do Gather Proper Packing Supplies

Invest in high-quality packing materials such as bubble wrap, packing paper, packing peanuts, sturdy boxes, and packing tape. These materials provide a cushion and protection for your fragile items.

Do Create a Packing Station

Set up a separate packing station with plenty of room, a clean surface, and easy access to all of your packing supplies. This can help you keep organized and lessen the chances of an accident occurring.

Do Wrap Each Item Individually

Wrap fragile items individually using bubble wrap or packing paper. Pay special attention to corners and delicate parts. If an item has multiple pieces, wrap them separately before packing them together.

Do Fill Empty Spaces

Fill any gaps inside the boxes with packing peanuts or crumpled paper to prevent items from shifting during transit. This extra padding helps absorb shocks and vibrations.

Do Label Boxes Clearly

Use a permanent marker to label boxes containing fragile items as “Fragile” and include arrows indicating the correct upright position. This will alert movers and help them handle these boxes with care.

Do Reinforce Boxes

Reinforce the bottoms of boxes with extra packing tape and add an additional layer of tape around the seams for added strength. Fragile items should be placed in boxes that are in good condition.

Do Pack Heavier Items First

When packing boxes for a move, put larger, non-fragile objects on the bottom and more delicate ones on top. This keeps delicate goods from being crushed.

The Don’ts

Don’t Overpack Boxes

Avoid overloading boxes with too many fragile items. It’s essential to maintain a balance between the weight of the items and the capacity of the box.

Don’t Use Newspaper Directly

While newspaper may seem like a cost-effective option, it can transfer ink onto your fragile items. Instead, use packing paper or bubble wrap to protect your belongings.

Don’t Stack Boxes Haphazardly

Avoid stacking boxes in a disorganized manner in your moving vehicle. Always place fragile items on top and use straps or ties to secure them in place to prevent shifting during transit.

Don’t Rush the Packing Process

Take your time when packing fragile items. Rushing can lead to inadequate protection and increased chances of breakage. Plan your packing well in advance of your moving day.

Don’t Skip Insurance

Even with the best packing practices, accidents can happen. Don’t skip the option of purchasing moving insurance. It provides peace of mind knowing that your fragile items are covered in case of damage during transit.

What Our Clients Say

I cannot speak highly enough of Heath and his team. The guys were all professional, on time and super fast. They handled our belongings like their own and were very careful. Another great thing is our driveway isn't the easiest to get a big truck up and down and they were able to do it no problem

Christopher

Great experience from start to finish! Booking process was smooth and simple. Heath did a great job contacting us prior and even gave us a special surprise the night before. Guys were extremely nice and professional. Took care of items as if they were their own. Would absolutely recommend 10/10

Kristin

These guys are very skilled at what they do! I sat and spoke with the foreman (I think moving crews have foremen?) at the CoolBox storage facility in Liberty Park. I watched them very quickly and efficiently load antique vending machines and the largest furniture I've ever seen. I was amazed.

Daniel

These guys did an excellent job helping me get furniture and a monster sized desk, moved across town without any hiccups. Very courteous and took care in not scratching any of our items. Will use again!

Aaron

I use these guys for a move early this year they were awesome. Fast, kind, and courteous. Highly recommend.
