When moving homes, the real deal only starts once you’ve finished packing all your smaller objects. Then, you’ll find yourself face-to-face with all the large furniture, and wonder: What do I do with all of this? Fear not, because with these five tips from qualified Nashville movers you’ll be carrying large objects with one hand tied behind your back.
(Not literally!)
Moving large objects without proper technique or care can be dangerous and cause back pain or injuries. Learn these tips and experience a smooth move without added trouble.
1. Carry Items High and Low
Very tall furniture can be difficult to move. To prevent mishaps, carry it horizontally, and tip the object backward at an angle. This helps maintain the item’s balance and prevents it from swinging uncontrollably.
Additionally, it will make carrying it up or down stairs easier, as the angle will match the stairs’ slope.
2. Buy Adjustable Moving Straps
Adjustable moving straps are a helpful product for moving heavy objects. They make lifting heavy furniture, mattresses, and other objects very easy because they place the pressure on stronger muscle groups like your legs and shoulders.
This essential moving supply will give you a more stable grip, and a lot more control to maneuver any object through your house and into a moving truck.
3. Disassemble
Whenever possible, disassemble your furniture to make it easier to transport. A packing tip is to place the nuts, bolts, and screws in a small bag and attach it to the bottom of each component. That way you will have everything you need to reassemble your furniture when you arrive.
Another pro tip: if you’re not confident in yourself being able to put it back together, record yourself as you dissemble it. That way, you’ll have a reference if you get lost somewhere in the process and will be free to master your post-move setup!
4. Add rollers
Three pieces of PVC pipe, available from any home center, can be your best aid in moving heavy objects. You just need 3 tubes with a 4-inch diameter. Then, place them under the object, like this:
- Take a pry bar and raise the object’s front edge. Slide two pipes underneath. Place one pipe close to the front and the other about halfway through.
- Start push the object over them. As it advances, place the third one in the empty front.
- Once the back pipe becomes free, pick it up and place it on the front. Then, simply repeat the process.
Easy, right?
5. Find a Partner!
More than some advice, having someone accompany you as you move large objects is a must to prevent accidents. Let’s admit it, most of us tend to overestimate our strength. If you try to move a heavy wardrobe, and end up with your feet stuck under it, you want someone nearby to help.
So don’t be prideful and find someone who can give you a hand!
6. Get Nashville Movers
Our last piece of advice from the Pink Zebra team is to get a Nashville Moving company—even if it’s not us! At the end of the day, paying for a hospital bill for an injury by overexerting yourself will be much more expensive than hiring a professional’s help.
