Items You Should Leave Behind Before a Move

The moving process can be stressful, whether you’re relocating to another state or just a few blocks over. You must pack your entire life in boxes, hire trustworthy Athens movers to make the trip, and unload everything into your new house.

Setting up a packing plan and downsizing before a move will help to simplify the process. Here are some items you won’t miss if you let them go.

5 Things to Leave Behind When Moving

1. Owner’s Manuals and Warranties

Appliances like microwaves, refrigerators, and hot water heaters tend to stay with the home. Maybe the previous heater broke down, and you installed a new one as a replacement, or you bought something and got paid for it by your landlord later. Or you’re a house owner, but you sold your house with these appliances included.

Whatever the reason, chances are high that you won’t take them with you. Make sure to leave their owner’s manuals behind, too. They will be useful for newer occupants, and you won’t need them.

The same goes for warranties. Sometimes, materials have transferable warranties. So, if you’ve remodeled recently, leave the warranties behind in case others need them.

2. Leftover Paint

If you have a stack of leftover paint cans from previous renovations, don’t load them into the moving truck. Paint is a hazardous material, and most moving companies won’t transport it.

Furthermore, new residents will find it useful to have accurate paint colors at hand.

3. Clothes You Don’t Use

If there’s any old clothing in the back of your closet that you never use, it’s time to let them go. This includes jeans that no longer fit and shirts you washed so much that they’ve lost all color.

Use moving as an opportunity to filter out the clothes you no longer use. You can sell your belongings to a secondhand store or donate them to a charity. If they aren’t usable, you can use them to wrap delicate objects before placing them into boxes.

4. House Plants and In-Ground Features

Unless you’re moving a short distance, finding new homes for your houseplants is a smart idea. The inside of a moving van can become very hot, and there is no water, which isn’t very plant-friendly.

Unless your moving company has special storage units, this can damage your plant and cause it to suffer from a stressful environment, which can be deadly for some plant species.

Additionally, anything anchored on the earth is regarded as real estate, meaning you can’t take it. This includes rooted plants, yard lights, mailboxes, and birdhouses.

5. Permanent Fixtures

Personal items go with the mover, but permanent fixtures should remain in the house. This means that anything permanently attached to the structure by bolts, nails, screws, or any other method, stays.

This includes light fixtures, ceiling fans, radiators, or built-in cupboards. If you installed any of these yourself, you could take them with you. However, removing a fixture can be difficult, cause damage to the property, and be challenging to move to your new location without residential moving services.
