How to Pack a Sewing Machine When You Move (Plus Extra Tips for Sewing Materials!)

Moving a sewing machine isn’t like boxing up books or kitchenware—it’s a delicate piece of machinery filled with small, delicate parts that can shift, bend, or break if not packed correctly. Whether you’re a casual hobbyist or a passionate sewist with a dedicated craft room, protecting your machine and sewing supplies with these proven tips is essential.

How to Safely Pack a Sewing Machine

Step 1: Gather the Right Packing Materials

Packing work starts by purchasing the right materials. Before you touch the machine, make sure you have:

  • Bubble wrap or foam sheets
  • Packing tape
  • Zip-top bags for small accessories
  • A blanket or packing paper
  • A sturdy box

If you have it, the sewing machine’s original box and foam inserts are ideal. If not, don’t worry; with a double-walled box and the method below, you can protect any sewing machine.

Step 2: Prep and Secure Your Sewing Machine

It’s important to secure the machine safely before starting.

  1. Unplug and remove the power cord and foot pedal. Coil cords neatly and place them in a zip-top bag.
  2. Detach loose parts such as the presser foot, needle, thread spool, and extension table. Wrap each piece separately.
  3. Cover the needle area and tension assembly. A small layer of bubble wrap is ideal to protect the most fragile components.
  4. Lock or tape the machine arm. If your model has a locking feature, activate it. Otherwise, gently tape the arm in place using painter’s tape (never duct tape, as it can leave residue).
  5. Close the cover or lower the needle plate. This prevents internal components from shifting.

Step 3: Wrap the Machine for Maximum Cushioning

This is where most DIY packers make mistakes—insufficient padding is the top cause of sewing-machine damage. Ensure the entire machine is wrapped in two layers of bubble wrap or foam sheets, securing them with tape.

For added protection, wrap the bubble-wrapped machine in a small moving blanket or thick towel. And leave no exposed corners! Impacts often occur on the machine’s edges.

Step 4: Prepare the Box

To prevent the machine from shifting during transit:

  • Line the bottom of the box with 3–4 inches of padding (crumpled paper, foam, or bubble wrap).
  • Create a snug “nest” so the machine sits securely and evenly.
  • Fill any space along the sides with foam peanuts, bubble wrap, or rolled packing paper.

If using the original box, check that the foam inserts still fit tightly. Then, seal well with strong packing tape and label the box FRAGILE – SEWING MACHINE – THIS SIDE UP.

Step 5: Pack Sewing Materials the Smart Way

While your sewing machine is the most delicate object, packing all your other materials safely is still key.

  • Fold fabric by color or type, then pack it in clear plastic bins to prevent moisture damage. You can add cedar chips or dryer sheets to keep fabric fresh.
  • Use a small craft organizer or plastic container to pack and separate threads. Insert a piece of foam to keep spools from tangling.
  • Group pins, buttons, zippers, and other items by category in zip-top bags or tackle boxes. Label each bag so you can set up your sewing area quickly after the move.
  • When it comes to scissors, rotary cutters, and sharp tools, sheath all blades, then wrap scissors in a towel and secure with a rubber band.
  • Store patterns and manuals in a waterproof file folder or envelope to protect them from moisture and other elements.
