Bringing the Fun Where You Go: How to Move a Pool Table

Pool tables are filled with laughter, slick moves, and fun experiences—until you have to transport them. Moving a pool table is not like moving your average furniture pieces, even for professional movers in Wilmington, NC. These heavy, bulky, and often delicate pieces weigh between 500 and 1,000 pounds and require precise disassembly and reassembly to transport them safely.

Understanding how to move a pool table and what tools you need is key in this environment.

A Step-By-Step Guide to Moving a Pool Table

1. Gather the Necessary Tools and Help

Before you start, make sure you have the proper tools for such an endeavor:

  • A power drill or screwdriver
  • Socket wrench
  • Staple remover
  • Moving blankets or padding
  • Furniture dollies
  • Protective gloves

You’ll also need at least 3 to 4 people to help. Pool tables are extremely heavy and moving one alone can be dangerous.

2. Measure Your Space and Route

Take measurements of the doorways, hallways, and staircases you’ll be passing through. Pool tables are large even when disassembled, and planning your path ahead of time prevents delays or damage. Measure the dimensions of the table itself to compare, too.

If you’re moving to a new home, check if the room where you want to keep the pool table has enough space. Ideally, you’ll want a few feet of clearance on all sides for comfortable playing.

3. Disassemble the Table

Moving a pool table in one piece is a recipe for disaster. Instead, carefully disassemble it in the following order:

  • Remove the Pockets: Start by removing the pockets. These are usually stapled or screwed in underneath. You can use a staple remover or a screwdriver to detach them.
  • Detach the Rails: Using a socket wrench, unscrew the bolts holding the rails together. Remove each rail and label it so you can reassemble it later.
  • Take Off the Felt: This step requires patience. If the felt is stapled on, use the staple remover to carefully pull it away without ripping. If it’s glued, you’ll need to peel it off gently, understanding that you may need a replacement during reassembly. Then, fold or roll the felt carefully.
  • Remove the Slate: This is the heaviest part. Most pool tables have three large slate slabs that are screwed into the frame. Carefully remove the screws and lift the slate pieces with at least two people. Slate is fragile and can crack if mishandled, so wrap each piece in blankets and label them for correct placement later.
  • Disassemble the Frame: Once the slate is removed, the frame can be disassembled and moved much more easily. Keep all hardware in labeled bags or containers.

4. Pack and Protect the Parts

Use moving blankets, padding, and bubble wrap to protect every table piece. Rails and legs are often made of hardwood and can be scratched easily. Label all parts, including hardware, and keep everything together to make reassembly easier.

5. Transport the Table Carefully

Use furniture dollies to move heavier components like the slate slabs. Secure all moving truck or vehicle parts to avoid shifting during transport. Don’t stack heavy items on any pool table parts—especially the slate.

What Our Clients Say

These guys are very skilled at what they do! I sat and spoke with the foreman (I think moving crews have foremen?) at the CoolBox storage facility in Liberty Park. I watched them very quickly and efficiently load antique vending machines and the largest furniture I've ever seen. I was amazed.

Daniel

We love Pink Zebra moving company! They handled a very stressful move for us with ease. We had several moves going on at the same time all going to different locations. The whole crew was so nice and they were so knowledgeabl of how to take extra care of some of my antique pieces.

Rodger

We loved our movers. They were super nice and professional and definitely knew how to pack a truck! Pink Zebra definitely went above and beyond. We have moved several times and this by far has been our best experience!

Stefanie

This is the best, most professional moving company I’ve ever used! Great experience from start the finish!

Jessica

I cannot speak highly enough of Heath and his team. The guys were all professional, on time and super fast. They handled our belongings like their own and were very careful. Another great thing is our driveway isn't the easiest to get a big truck up and down and they were able to do it no problem
