Organizing and conducting a move is a lot of work, so many people opt to hire qualified movers in Atlanta, Georgia, who can (quite literally) take the weight off them. However, on the final day of the move, doing nothing while the crew does their work can feel a little bit awkward.
Even if you’ve hired fun movers like the ones from the Pink Zebra team, you may feel like you don’t know what to do. Do you need to stay out of the way? Should you contribute in some way? How would you even occupy yourself in the meantime? While you’re under no obligation to do any of the work—it’s our job, after all!—here are some tips on what you can do while movers are packing your stuff.
4 Things to Do While Your Movers Are Moving
1. Be There
You need to be at home on a moving day. If you absolutely can’t make it, have a trusted person there to revise everything.
They must be present the entire day to answer the movers’ questions or provide parking instructions. Just in case, you should be attentive to the phone even if you’ve left someone in charge if we need to contact you.
2. Clear the Path
Ensure the route from the moving van to all house entrances before movers arrive and throughout the day. After all, movers may not always be able to see the path ahead of them, especially if they’re moving large items.
So, walk the path the movers will travel from the front door, garage door, and garden gate to the moving vehicle before they come and clear away any obstacles, such as children’s toys or the yard hose. Shovel the snow if it is snowing, sprinkle some salt on the ground if the floor is frozen, and sweep and blow away any leaves and broken branches.
3. Keep the Kids Occupied
Make sure your children stay out of the way as the movers load the moving vehicle and bundle your possessions. If you can, leave them at a relative or neighbor’s house. Kids running around and getting in the way of movers can be very dangerous.
The same goes for pets. With the doors and gates open, it will be too easy for them to escape, so keep them in a crate or kennel or get a friend to take care of them in the meantime.
4. Be Available for Assistance
Expert movers know how to pack big goods and your possessions to prevent harm. Even if you’re tempted to help, it’s not necessary. We don’t want you to get hurt trying to lift heavy items while you paid professional movers to do that. So, keep your distance while available to respond to possible inquiries.
If you want to be a good host, you can offer your movers something to drink while they’re working, like cold water on a summer day or hot coffee in winter. Moreover, your movers will need access to a bathroom, so it’s a good idea to set up a washing station with liquid soap and paper towels. That way, they can clean up before meals or after moving something dirty, like garage objects.
